Truths & Challenges

A recent study of military veterans-turned-entrepreneurs from Syracuse University identified two truths about veteran entrepreneurs and three common challenges veteran entrepreneurs face. The Second Service Foundation was created to help address these truths and designed to solve these challenges.

Truths

There are approximately 2.5 million veteran-owned small businesses in the United States, representing 9.1 percent of all U.S. businesses and employing nearly 6 million Americans annually (SBA, 2017)

  • Truth #1: Military veterans are more likely to own a business than civilians.

  • Truth #2: Vetrepreneurs tend to out-earn civilian entrepreneurs.
The Second Service Foundation was launched on Veterans Day 2016 with a mission to inspire, educate, and support veteran business ownership in America and produce measurable outcomes for the veteran-owned and military spouse-owned businesses we serve.

Challenges

Challenge #1: Access to Capital

  • The Second Service Foundation Military Entrepreneur Challenge provides low-income small businesses and entrepreneurs a chance to earn social-impact and early-stage capital.

Challenge #2: Connecting with Qualified Mentors

  • The Second Service Foundation speed coaching and mentoring programs connect entrepreneurs to established and successful business coaches and mentors.

Challenge #3: Limited Networks

  • The Second Service Foundation networking events help entrepreneurs expand their networks and make successful connections that aid their growing enterprise.
